Part I
In order to gain a better understanding of the five offense characteristics of sexual offenses, murder, acquisitive crime, organized crime, and terrorism, it is essential to identify what they each have in common, the victim. In some cases, the offender feels that the victim is simply an object, playing a role in their story, are a representation of someone in their life, or may provide them with some type of psychological release (Canter & Youngs, 2009, p. 292). According to Canter and Youngs (2009) the offender most often tries to maintain order when committing their offense which leads to a particular treatment of the victim or style (p. 292). This has led to the development of viewing the victim as one of three categories in which the victim usually fits in for the offender. These are victim as an object, victim as a vehicle, and victim as a person (Canter & Youngs, 2009, p. 292-293).
